The Gospel According to Toy Story

Posted by Chris Durbin on

My favorite movie of all time is Toy Story. One of the reasons I love this movie is the transformation that Woody, the main character, goes through. Woody starts out the movie comfortable and secure in his status as the favorite toy of his owner Andy; but then Buzzy Lightyear - the coolest toy ever - arrives on the scene and everything changes. Woody’s identity and security are shattered as Buzz quickly becomes Andy’s new favorite toy. Woody becomes enraged with jealousy and tries to get rid of Buzz; only to end up sending the two of them on a journey that transforms them from bitter enemies to friends who are willing to sacrifice themselves to help each other.

I love this story because I often find myself caught up in the same sort of selfishness that Woody struggled with. I want to be the favorite toy, the center of my own universe. But then the ultimate Buzz Lightyear arrives and shatters my entire universe. Out of love Christ came and gave Himself for us on the cross, and this transforms us. We don’t have to be the favorite toy anymore, because Christ was for us. We can give ourselves for others because Christ gave Himself for us. God’s Grace doesn’t just save us, it transforms us. So where are you in the story?

“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” – Mark 10:45
